ONTARIO RIDERS TO COMPETE IN BIKE MARATON

Local bicycle racers are assured of some crack outside competition in the annual Winnipeg to Winnipeg Beach marathon July 27. Word came today from the Lakehead Wheelers Bicycle club, Fort William, that a 50-mile road race will be sponsored by the club, July 13, in which all the best riders in the Lakehead district are expected to compete and the first four men to place will be sent to Winnipeg to enter the Beach race.
With appointment of committees and officials by the town of Winnipeg Beach, the work of organization began Tuesday. J. C. Pape, of Canada Cycle and Motor, again heads the prize committee. Dr. F. E. Warriner, mayor of Winnipeg Beach, is in charge of the publicity, and E. H. Call is chairman of the committee on arrangements.
W. P. Fillmore is official timer. All these officials have had experience in previous races and are well known to the regular riders.
Major trophies are the Dunlop shield, for winner of the open race, the Tribune cups for the class B and C winners. Each winner holds the trophy one year and receives an individual cup. There will be a long and attractive list of additional prizes.
Entry forms and more detailed information will be printed daily in The Tribune for two or three weeks before the race.

Lakehead Cyclists Coming

[Special to The Winnipeg Tribune]
FORT WILLIAM, May 10 -- In reply to an invitation extended through Jack Pape, Canadian Wheelmen association representative at Winnipeg, to send riders to compete in The Winnipeg Tribune's annual 50-mile bicycle race, July 28, Walter
Sargent, district C.W.A. official and president of the Lakehead Wheelers club, intimated today the possibility of entering four men. We will hold an elimination two weeks before the event is scheduled to take place, and should there be four of our members qualify to a certain standard we will set, which I think there will be, we will see that they get their chance in this increasingly popular classic," he said.

Lakehead Wheelers

June 27 -- Due to the rains during the week-end the schoolboy meet could not be carried on as desired. Last Thursday, June 20, was the only time that any races were put on and then the track wasn't what it should have been. Riding in the middle of the track, Angus McDonald, of Ogden, took a mile race from his school mates, Steve Hendricks, Peter Kyrylik and Nick Hyeyk.
The schoolboy meet due to the closing of school and the various boys going to their summer camps has been postponed until September. A spectacular and interesting race was seen at the football game last Monday, June 24, when members of the Lakehead Wheelers Bicycle club met to put on a miel race. Johnny DeGiacomo, our riding captain, led the field to cross the tape two minutes and 30 and four-fifths seconds after the start. He was closely followed by Paul Brunetta who placed second. Joe Brescia collided against Johnny DeGiacomo's pedal, having four spokes of his wheel broken, but he was
able to finish. Others competing were Sec Brunello, Frankie DeGiacomo and William Gavares. Johnny DeGiacomo also won the lap prize, with three laps, to his credit. Alderman Robert Walker, vice-president of the club, presented the prizes. Officials were Dave Corbett, Mac Dolcetti, Louis Brunetti and Sammy Shapton.
A meeting of the Lakehead Wheelers' Bicycle club was held on Tuesday, June 25, at Gerry's hardware store, when the members came in full numbers to discuss the many details brought up. The 50-mile bicycle marathon is just 16 days away--July 13.
Entries have not yet been received, but anyone proposing to compete is asked to get their entry form from Sec Brunello, fill it in and hand it in before July 6. It has been agreed that the race will begin at McKellar Park at 2:30 p.m., ride to the Grand Trunk bridge and commence the race on the Scott highway at 3 p.m. All riders are expected to have their C.W.A. cards filled out and handed in to the secretary before the end of the week.
Races will be held on Friday and Monday at the football games as stated by Johnny DeGiacomo, riding captain. A meeting of the club is to be held on Tuesday, July 2, at 8 p.m. at Brunetti's bicycle shop. All those interested are asked to be present.
