Critical Mass Ride
Taking place this Friday, October the 27th at 5pm is our annual Halloween Critical Mass Ride. Critical mass bike rides take place in cities all over the world on the last friday of every month. They were designed to gather large groups of cyclist in order to bring awareness to rider safety, car pollution and alternative transport. Large group rides also allow riders to meet other bike lovers. Last year we had over 100 cyclist of all ages get together (mostly in costume) for a fun ride on Thunder Bay streets. This year we are hoping for another great party on wheels. Meet at the Agora circle (The main entrance at Lakehead University) with bikes, helmets and costumes and help support a safer, healthier, cheaper mode of transportation. Oh and costumes are highly recommended, it is Halloween time after all. There aren't too many times cyclists are encouraged to look extra strange. So live it up and get dressed up!
Can't wait to see you there, and remember... burn fat, not oil!

Santiago de Cuba
Let me assist you to organize your winter cycling. Cycling and training in a warm climate during winter is a dream for some but a reality for me. I am Reg McCoy, a Canadian cyclist and Cuba is my second home since 1988. I have been cycling there as well as designing and leading all-inclusive bicycle tours for over 15 years.
The undisputed best road riding and mountain bike centre in the entire country is Santiago de Cuba my home. This city is the cultural centre of Cuba and is located in a Vancouver like setting…it's on the Caribbean Sea surrounded by the Sierra Maestra mountains. This tropical location allows for cycling along rolling coastal roads, gradual climbs over the mountains to the Central Valley and beyond. Some mountain climbs will challenge even the fittest of athletes offering a start from sea level climbing to 1100m in just 11km. The challenge is there for mountain biking too!
Flights and hotel packages to Santiago de Cuba with Sunwing, a Canadian tour operator and Hotel Melia Santiago, a 5-star international hotel, can easily be booked on the Internet or with your travel consultant therefore minimizing your expenses. Package prices begin at $969 Canadian plus taxes and include your return flight from Toronto, transfers IN/OUT from the Santiago airport to your hotel and accommodation at Hotel Melia Santiago for 8 days/ 7 nights based on double occupancy. To fast track your knowledge of local cycling routes both on and off- road and an insight into the Cuban culture I offer my services at $100 CUC per person payable in Cuba.
The ideal time to be in Santiago de Cuba is from December through February as the temperature is usually 28 – 32C daytime and 18 – 22C nights. Very little rain falls during this time in this area of Cuba . While most other areas see cool wet weather you can enjoy sunny days cycling.
As for the past 9 years I have offered my all inclusive fully escorted tours available through Active Journeys Inc. but also realize that accomplished athletes need in country consulting only. My consulting services include how to organize your group or individuals while in Canada. Advise and direct you to cycling routes whether it be for intense training or more casual routes to absorb the feeling of being in Cuba You tell me what you expect and if it's possible you will have it.
Bottom line, you accomplish your riding objectives with my extensive knowledge of Cuba.
Please pass this information on to your club members as I do look forward to seeing them in Cuba.
Regards,
Reg McCoy

Third Annual Hayward Library Fall Century Tour
Library fund raising events will bookend the Hayward Fall Festival weekend with Big Top and bicycling. On Saturday September 23rd the Hayward Fall Festival Main Street will bustle with artists, crafts people and musicians.
 |
Friday evening Big Top Chautauqua is set to perform at Hayward High School. The weekend of fun will climax on Sunday with the 3rd Annual Hayward Library Fall Century Tour presented by North Woods Community Health Centers starting and finishing at Old Hayward Eatery and Brewpub.
For bicyclists, the Century will show the best the area offers in roads and scenery. "Last year's ride was our first visit to Hayward," said Antioch, Illinois cyclists Dan and Susan Mentgan. "The route was well marked and extra scenic and the roads were in beautiful condition. We liked the 'not too tough' terrain with the nice mix of hills and flat. The rest stops were great and the volunteers real friendly."
The 100-mile route passes two-dozen lakes and ventures into the Chequamegon National Forest on easy riding terrain. Riders also have five other routes to choose from including 100-kilometer (62-mile), 45–mile, 27-mile plus 13 or 5-mile novice and family route options. Early entry fees are in effect until September 11th.
The start/finish location is at the popular Old Hayward Eatery & Brew Pub. Every rider will get a ticket for a chance to win a new $2,000 Specialized Roubaix carbon fibre bicycle compliments of North Woods Community Health Centers and New Moon Ski Shop. Riders will also get tickets for other prizes, post-ride food and beverage at Old Hayward where the Buddy Scott Blues Band will entertain.
For information call or email the Hayward Public Library (715/634-2161, hlibrary@hayward.nwls.lib.wi.us) or log on to www.haywardareachamber.com for a printable PDF copy.
Ride for Karen
Hi Club organizers,
I want to let you know about a century ride coming up in early September. The ride attracts a good cross section of cyclists from Southern Ontario. The event will be held on Sunday September 10, 2006 and will feature two routes - a 25km course and a 160km century ride through quiet roads in York, Peel and Caledon.
Started in 2002, the Ride for Karen is a yearly cycling event that is held as a tribute to the life and legacy of Karen Tobias and to raise money for charities that help people living with cancer, and those who care for them. In the last four years the Ride for Karen has raised more than $250,000, which was used to help build and furnish new cancer care facilities, provide much needed resources for cancer support centers and send kids with cancer to camp.
Three children's cancer camps have been selected as the recipients of the proceeds from the 2006 Ride for Karen - they are Camp Quality, Camp Oochigeas and Camp Trillium.
All details of the event and registration are available online at www.rideforkaren.com. Entry fees are $75, reduced to $50 if cyclists register by August 24th. Event day registration is $100. If you raise more than $200 in pledges (which can be solicited and collected online), entry fees are waived. Entry includes lunch (for the 160km), a feed station and after-ride BBQ. The ride is supported. Cyclists should be prepared for a hilly, but fun and scenic 160km. Last year cyclists took between 5 and 7 hours to complete the ride. The largest group on the road (about 90 cyclists) finished in just over 5 hours. Check out the rider's comments section and photos from our past rides.
Any questions email me kris@rideforkaren.com or take a look at www.rideforkaren.com.
Cheers,
Kris

In Motion for the Missing Charity Cycle Tour
Hello,
I am contacting you in hopes of encouraging your membership to support the cross-Canada In Motion for the Missing charity cycle tour, in benefit of The Missing Children's Network Canada and Child Find Canada. Two of our volunteers, Brian Potter and Tom Ropeleski, retired teachers, are undertaking the monumental task of cycling across Canada in aid of The Missing Children's Network Canada and Child Find Canada. We are extending a welcome invitation to the Thunder Bay Cycling Club to help us with this worthwhile cause.
The Missing Children's Network Canada and Child Find Canada are humanitarian organizations dedicated to the search for missing and exploited children and to the prevention of their disappearances through safety education programs reaching thousands of Canadian schoolchildren yearly. The Missing Children's Network Canada and Child Find Canada receive no governmental funding, and thus rely on the generosity of our corporate and individual sponsors to help us continue our important work. Please feel free to learn more about this organization at www.missingchildren.ca
The Missing Children's Network Canada is kindly asking the Thunder Bay Cycling Club to consider holding a charity fundraiser (perhaps a cycle-thon, mass garage sale, car wash, spaghetti dinner, etc.) to help us raise the necessary funds to support Brian and Tom as they pursue their dream. We would also encourage your members to cycle with Brian Potter and Tom Ropeleski for a few kilometers as they come through your area on Tuesday, May 30, 2006! We would gratefully acknowledge your generosity in supporting this most special event by placing thanks and a link to your website on the official In Motion for the Missing website at www.inmotionforthemissing.ca
The Missing Children's Network Canada sincerely thanks the Thunder Bay Cycling Club for considering to help us light the lamp of hope across Canada, for missing children everywhere.
With regards,
Susan Senyk
