Thunder Bay Cycling Club Spring 1999
Read on to discover all the great things happening this season.... Plan on attending our annual spring General Meeting at Confederation College on March 18 at 7:30pm. This is a good time to reacquaint with fellow cyclists and learn of all the great things happening this season. Memberships will be available. President's Report Welcome to the "99" cycling year. I'm excited about the year and our new executive. Many new ideas, places to ride, and more social events. Dave Curtis, Reid Carter and Mike Grzelewski are our new executive members. Our schedule has changed with the introduction of Thursday night time trials. This will allow members to ride the mountain bike series sponsored by the Black Sheep on Wednesday nights. Laurie Leslie, Graham Stewart, Doug & Marva Taylor and myself came in 4th in the C-KAP Hugh Hewes Team Trophy. Not bad for 5 people! Congratulations! Doug and Marva Taylor will be moving on this year, as Doug has accepted a position with Ontario Hydro in Toronto. We will miss them. We are looking for a dedicated volunteer to resume the duties of road touring on Sundays. The schedule is in place, but we would like someone to "oversee" the program. I hope someone will step forward. We are endeavouring to improve our communication with club members. Please feel free to approach the executive with suggestions for our web page, hot-line and newsletter. I'm looking forward to dusting off my bikes and riding again. I'll see you out on the roads! John Victor
Send in your registration form to the C-Kap Coordinator and he will send you a C-Kap number and an annual cycling log. Using your odometer, keep track of how many kilometres you cycle each week. Fill in the boxes for monthly totals, and running totals. At the end of each year submit your log to the C-KAP Coordinator and you will receive an annual report and the awards you have earned. Awards are available for the following km totals - 1000, 2500, 5000, 10000, 15000 and 25000. CKAP is free for OAC members, including the cost of badges and medals. Non-OAC members can particpate by paying a onetime registration fee of $25.00. Badges and medals must be paid for (badges $6.00 and medals $10.00) when sending in cycling log at year's end. Individual and team awards are handed out annually to the individuals and club logging the most kilometres. So join up and log kilometres for yourself and your club. You may be interested to note that the women's trophy is named after our own Laurie Leslie! For more information, or an application form, check out their website at http://www.@ontariocycling.org
This is a wonderful one day event with great roads, great food stops and great people. Each year the Thunder Bay contingent gets bigger and bigger. If you haven't ridden this event in the past, plan on attending this year. Remember that registration deadline is May 1st. Please don't make plans to ride this event if you haven't paid your registration fee. This is the major fundraiser for the year for the Paul Bunyan Cyclists and the event is well worth the fee! Please check our hot line @626-8725 for ride updates and changes. Watch for the
"Bike for Life" - Lung Association Charity Event Put the date on your calendar and watch for more details! We regret to announce that the TBCC will not be offering a Mountain Bike Kids program this spring. Unfortunately no one stepped forward to run the program. We hope to be able to run the event again next season. If anyone is interested in putting together a program for next spring, please contact John Victor. Road Racing
The early season races will be challenging for all. The Pizza Pizza season opener and Hymers Classic are early in the schedule and will certainly be contested in "European Classic" race conditions (bad weather). There are 5 races that make up the Points Series - Pizza Pizza, Hymers Classic, Border & Back, Tour of Thunder Bay and Armstrong. This series will be contested in A, B and Women's categories. Ski Days As in past years, the cycling club has enjoyed many "ski days" (and nights) this season. We started the ski season off with our annual Christmas ski/social at Lappe. It was December 11, and as you may recall, the snow was not plentiful at that particular time. But some people attempted a ski while others merely enjoyed the sauna, great food and great "prizes". As always at these events, a good time was had by all. The next ski day, planned for Kakabeka on January 10, was brutally cold and for a complete report on the happenings I'll refer you to Dave Anderson, who was the only brave soul who showed up for the ski! With the warming of the weather shortly after, the skiing improved, as did attendance at the rest of the gatherings! Thanks to Pam and Tom for hosting another fun-filled moonlight ski in Murillo; to Laurie and Graham who had us back for sauna, eats and dancing after a great ski at Kamview; to Roger and Anne Marie who fed the gang 2 weekends in a row (looking for that hospitality award I think) at Mink Mountain and then again after the Sibley warm up. And as we go to press, we are looking forward to an apres Sibley sauna at the Pantrys followed by food and fun times at the Latimers. Thanks to all cyclists who hosted ski socials and all those cyclists who made the events so much fun. We look forward to seeing even more of you out there next year!
